Back From School Trip (Revised) (William/Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:00 am

I came back from the school trip today. The trip wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. It wasn’t fun at all.

First, everyday we got punishments like getting in push-up position. I hated that because I never did anything and I still got punished. Also, I felt very mad because the people who gets us into trouble does whatever they want and doesn’t listen to the teacher’s instruction. I don’t really understand why they want punishments so bad.

Second, we didn’t have any time to rest or play. Everyday was filled with boring schedule and we couldn’t even chat when we were resting in our room. Also, the time for resting was usually short and sometimes we just got punished in those time, too. What really disappointed me is that even when we were sleeping, we couldn’t talk at all.

I hope the people realize that the trip should be better than now.

Street Vendors (reaction-Julia)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:59 am

These days, a lot of people are worried about food saftey. Well, actually most of the young children or teenagers don’t really care about food safety. Even my sister, who is 14 years old, eat the food called Sneakers. Sneakers have melamine in it, but my sister just eats them because they are delicious. Also, in front of my school, there are about three street vendors, selling spicy ricecakes, hot dogs, and sometimes icecrea. Most students of my school buy some food from there. They think the food they are selling is delicious. However, do you think these snacks are safe and clean enough? Well, I don’t think so. First, there is no water in street vendors. Therefore, the people can’t wash the plates of food. Also, the food may have been kept for a long time and not fresh. How do tou think about street vendors?

Only GOLD medal?-Susie(thoughts)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:50 pm

Did you watch the advertisement of an oil company that Jang Mi-ran (gold medalist in lifting weight) comes out? Or did you watch the advertisement of few banks that Park Tae-Hwan(gold medalist in swimming) comes out? In the two advertisements that are being broadcasted these days, gold medalists from Beijing Olympics comes out. There are few advertisements that have gold medalists, but I’ve never seen one with a silver medalist nor bronze.

At the Beijing Olympic games, we won the 7th place by earning 13 gold medals 10 silver, and 8 bronze. It was a very good score and every athletes worked hard. Especially, the athletes who won the gold medal decorated the first page of newspapers, or the whole part of sports part. Also people became their fans. However, there are also many athletes who worked hard, but wasn’t lucky enough to earn medals, or athletes who won silver and bronze medals. Some became famous because of their outlooks, but not many people are familiar with their names.

I think this is completely unfair, especially people who won silver or bronze medals. The color of the medal doesn’t match with the person’s efforts. However, most of the people have an attitude of thinking gold medals as the only medals. It is true that our scores depend on the number of gold medals, but we should cheer up the silver medalists, bronze medalists and athletes who weren’t able to earn any medals, because they might have a good score on the London Olympics…

Here’s the link to my favorite song “Apologize” by One Republic.

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=xBazmTmvkMs

I like this song mainly because of it’s rhytm. It’s pretty addictive. My older brother told me this song a few months ago and from then, I’ve been listening to this song forever!

This song’s actually has very strong beats but this one’s different.

Enjoy!!

School Camp(Jennifer-journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:36 pm

I know there is a week left for my school camp which is on November 17 to 19. However I am extremely excited! Unlike other schools, our school goes to Kyeong-Ju. (I am not sure if the spelling is right!) Many people complain about going to Kyeong-Ju instead of Jeju Island but it doesn’t really matter to me. I went to Jeju Island more than three times and I only went to Kyeong-Ju once, so it will be a good chance for me to learn Shilla’s cultural assets.

Since I am class president, I am the room leader. Two rooms were given so I begged the vice-president to take the tough and popular girls because I had a bad experience of having popular girls in my room before. This time, my roommates are all nice and shy so I am glad.

I hope I have a great time in Kyeong-Ju because it is the last school camp for us. About three months later, we will graduate elementary school. After the three months, all the 6th graders will need to study very much so I am worried to get older. However, when I go to Kyeong-Ju, I am going to try to play instead of thinking about worries.  I really hope I have a good time in Kyeong-Ju!

Global Warming (Tony-Thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 3:45 pm

Global warming is a global issue these days. This effect means that the earth is getting warmer and warmer every day. Even a seven year old kid knows that the world is getting warmer, and the world is at a grave danger of being flooded. This tells us how serious the problem with global warming is.

We are releasing huge amounts of harmful gas into the air in our daily lives, which is the major cause of the global warming. It is obvious that we should start to make improvements to at least reduce the amount of global warming. A lot of people are blaming the government for not acting. However, I think we have to blame ourselves for this issue. If we just make a few changes in our lives, we could reduce the amount of global warming. For example, we could use fans, instead of air conditioners in hot summer days. Through this, we can reduce the amount of gas that makes a hole in our ozone. Also, we can ride bikes, or walk rather than ride cars. The amount of gas released from cars is one of the main causes of global warming. Therefore, we should not blame the government for global warming. First, we should blame ourselves for not making a change in our everyday lives, and make the changes by ourselves.

Why should people have to worry about Melamine?(Irene-Thoughts)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 3:23 pm

Why do we have to worry about food safety? Why can’t we trust people anymore?

I am so upset that we humans cannot trust each other by food! Did you hear that there was an incident when a person from Japan ate a cup noodle and got his tongue paralyzed? This is very serious. How can you know that there is pesticide inside a noodle that we eat very often? I believe that people have grown very cruel and not faithful anymore. Before, people were able to be trusted, to be trusted by food especially.

How did all this change? The main problem that I think why people have turned this way is because of about getting more money. As the economical system has grown to be quite dangerous, the people who are working would obviously want to get a lot of money. This has changed people’s life. People began this habit of “fooling”. To get more money, people are trying to spend the least money as possible to make the product and sell them as expensive as they can, people are putting melamine, pesticides and so on to make the quality that it has to fool the machine that looks out for those kind of materials.

I believe that we should not sell snacks at all. We should break the root of snacks first. Because there were snacks and all that junk food, it led to all this “melamine and pesticide dilemma”. We should break the root of snacks , junk foods, and street vanders before the next genration. Because of eating all these snacks, this situation has broken out. Why should we have to worry about things like this?

Pizza(Julia-journel)

“What should we eat for lunch today?” my mom murmured to herself. Then I said to her, “I want to eat a slice of pizza, but I don’t think we can order it from Pizza Hut. Melamine can be found in the pizza.” Suddenly, my mom smiled. She told me that we could make the pizza. Even though we didn’t have the dough, we had a lot of slices of bread. Also, we had onions, tomato sauce, cheese, bacon, green peppers, mushrooms, and pepperoni.

We started cooking. First, we washed our hands. Then, on the slices of fresh, white bread, we spread some tomato sauce with a knife. Since I like tomato sauce very much, I put a little too much. After that, we started to wash all the vegetables, such as mushrooms, onions, and green peppers. My mom cut them into small pieces. Next, with a small knife, I cut the bacon and pepperoni so that they are  not too large to eat. Lastly, we put all the ingredients on the slices of bread. It was finally finished. Now, we just needed to put the slices of bread in the  oven.  However, I felt that something very important was missing. Together, my mom and I thought for a long time. Then, I found the cheese on the table! I sprinkled the cheese on the top of the bread.

We put the slices of bread in the oven and cooked for about ten minutes. A delicious smell filled my house. I called all my family memebers for lunch. I tasted the “pizza” first. It was amazingly scrumptous! It was actually better than the pizzas that are sold outside. I ate two of them. The “pizza” was very easy to make and also took just a few minutes to make it. I thought that it is very good to eat when a person doesn’t have a lot of time to eat the meals. Try it at home!

Korean Songs (Tony-Reaction) Final Draft

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 2:17 pm

A lot of Korean students know about a Korean boy band named, Big Bang. They are really famous in Asia, and their songs are loved by a lot of Koreans. 2 days ago, this boy band released a new alum called, “Remember”. I loved all the songs in the album. I especially liked a song titled, “Sunset Glow”. When I listened to all the songs in the album, I knew that millions of fans will love these songs. Also, I knew that these songs will effect thousands of children that listen to them.  Even though I loved all these songs, I was worried about the effects that this song will cause to Korean children. I’m not just talking about Big Bang. I am talking about all the other famous bands and singers of Korea.

Firstly, most of the famous songs that Korean children love are about romance. We can take the songs made by Big Bang as an example. The only song that they made which is not related to romance is “How Gee” and “Dirty Cash”. These romance-related songs are not good for the children, because romance bothers a child’s education. Considerable amount of children in Korea will be effected, because a lot of children will listen to famous songs.

Secondly, a lot of music videoes made by famous bands or singers contain scenes that give bad effects toward children. We can take a music video of “Day by Day” as an example. This video contains a scene of two members of Big Bang fighting physically.  Also, it shows one member who destroys his house to show his anger. Some kids might follow this after they watch the video.

I hope a lot of singers and bands will consider about the effects that they give toward children. They should change their songs and movies into more of a beneficial type.

Cheong Shim (William/Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:14 pm

Today, the qualifier for the Cheong Shim International Academy was announced. I wasn’t that nervous because I thought I did really well on the interviews and other process I had to go through. I didn’t really want to go into that school. When, I came back from my school my mom told me that I qualified. I was really excited. However, in my mind I wondered if I should even go to that school. If I go to an internation school, I would have way more opportunity with better curriculum and the facility like big grass field. There are lots of things I have to give up to go to Cheong Shim. I won’t see my friends as much and I would have to adapt to a new environment. Also, I won’t be able to see my families often because Cheong Shim has dorms. I can’t decide what I should do and when I decide on one thing it feels like a wrong choice. I would have to think more to decide on it.

As you know, Kim Yu-Na, the excellent figure skater of South Korea captured her gold medal in her first senior-level world figure skating championships. Even though she hurt her back, and she is only 16 years old, she practiced a lot and finally, she won what she wanted. Yu-Na Kim received the the highest score ever recorded in the women’s short program, 71.95 points.

I am very proud that she is Korean because she can show another countries that even though Korea is a small country, it is strong. Plus, I felt that she skates very well. She can do tripe axels with no problem, and she can also spin fast and well. Her moves are as graceful as swans, and looks like a dancing angel. She always has a confidence on her face that she is going to win even when she makes mistakes. I hope she can keep up the great work.

Koreans Have to Act!(Tony-Thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:53 pm

In our History, Korea suffered from being colonized by China and Japan. Now, Japanese and Chinese people are trying to take Korean properties away! Firstly, Japan is trying to claim Dok-Do. Secondly, China is trying to claim Bak Du Mountain.

Dok Do is a small island in the east side of Korean seas. Why are Japanes trying to claim this island? It’s because this island is full of natural resources. In fact, it contains methan-hydrate that can last Koreans for 30 years. We are lacking energy source with such sudden increas of population. Therefore, an island like Dok Do is really important to us. We shouldn’t just watch Japanese people when they are claiming it freely.

While this is happening in the eastern sea, China is trying to claim Bak Du Mountain. Chung Dynasty, the last dynasty of China,  was believed to have started from this mountain. Therefore, China thought they should claim Bak Du Mountain. Sadly, they are doing a very good job on it, since they already claimed half of the mountain. Koreans must start acting now to protect the Korean property!

iBT Toefl – Journal (Ariel)

Wow. I actually do not know if I am luck y or not, to tell you the fact that I took about 6 – 8 toefl tests until know actually. I thought it would be very useful for later life, because by having a good Toefl score, I could go to better high schools that can ACTUALLY let me go to universities like Harvard! So, my actual point is that… I have actually had scores lower than 100 until know. I did, like I always do, my best, but my scores never passed the first score I EVER got-98. Well, the first time I took the Toefl test was when I was in Canada, and I guess I was extremely nervous. I thought I had done awfully. It was actually a good score considering it as the first score I ever got. However, I really wanted to make my scores higher than that! I wanted at least 110! But it did not work that way. My scores were, 97, 98, or sometimes even 8_. The negative effect that I felt for sure is that I could feel myself not getting nervous, because I was always thinking,’ this is just another toefl test.’ I really think people should be nervous. I tried again and again to be nervous, but it did not work that way,, BUt! This time, I got 101! An actual 101 in toefl! I think the main reason was that, it was the LAST toefl score I could take before middle school, and I heard toefl would be an important factor.

Lucky Day (John – Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 1:40 pm

Well, it was really amazing. It was a long time since I have gotten a day like this before. In front of our school, there is a grandma that sells those sweet candy that is yellow. In korean, it’s called the bbob ki. Anyway, that grandma had a big piece of cardboard with about 300 little pieces of paper sticking out of it. It was a something like a lottery. Each piece of paper has words wrotten on it: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, or no luck.  If you get first, you get the biggest, if you chose the fifth, you get the smallest. But, the disadvantage was that there was only one first from the 300 pieces of paper. I trusted my luck, paid the money, and picked a piece of paper. When I opened it up, WHAT A SURPRISE! From the 300 pieces of paper, I picked the piece of paper that said: first. All of my other friends were surprised, and I was really surprised, too. But I also saw that the grandma’s face started to darken. Still, she had no choice and gave me a giagantic fish shaped candy.

But that wasn’t all for that day. When I was on the way going to my math academy, I was still smiling because I picked the first paper and ate tasty candy. But then, I saw something rectangular and blue colored infront of me. I went up to it to see what it was. WHAT A SURPRISE AGAIN! This time, it was three bills of one thousand won. So I picked three thousand won by luck. Just at that time, I thought that it was really my lucky day. It’s actually very rare to have a day like this. As a lot of people might know, luck is also important, too.

As you might now, Chae Jhin Shil, a Korean singer, commited a suicide. Why would a person like her commit a suicide? There are a lot of reasons that people think about. One of these reasons is that a rumor on internet was suspecting Chae Jhin Shil of being a loan shark. Not long ago, a person named Ahn Jae Hwan commited suicide. Some people thought that Chae Jhin Shil lend some money to Ahn Jae Hwan, and threatened the man to pay it back. Therefore, a lot of people started to uspect Chae Jhin Shil of being a loan shark. After drinking, Chae Jhin Shil suddenly commited suicide because of some of her alchoholic effects mixed with her worries about being suspected as a loan shark. After her suicide, the police found out that this rumor was not real. However, it took away the life of a famous singer.

This shows us the power of rumors. Rumors are just a few sentences. However, they can sometimes end up costing the lives of innocent people! I was amazed by the power of a group of words called rumors. We should learn to control this dangerous thing before it starts to control us!

Food Safety Danger! (John – Thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:37 am

This year, as a lot of people would know, there has been many problems about the food safety which includes AI, mad cow disease, melamine, and etcetera. The citizens in South Korea fear that they might eat food that have problems. Also, there was a lot of chaos in many countries around the world. We have to do something so that there would be no more chaos in the country. We have the responsibilities to save ourselves.

Well, what should we do to solve this problem? First, I think that the government should give orders to the companies that study about food safety so that they would check the products that we import from the other countries, especially China or America. But, we would have to check the food products very, very carefully. This would give help because then, we would have a chance to beware for unsafe food. Second, I think that instead of importing products from other countries, it would be better if we make them ourselves. Then, the products would be credible and we would not have any fear in eating food. If there’s no choice, we should import. But if there are products that we could produce oureselve, including rice, vegetables, and fruits, I think we should definitely do it. If the companies do this, then we should appreciate them very much because they are helping us in a big way. Anyway, they’re doing it for their safety, too.

Test Score(Jennifer-journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:26 am

From the Second Term, our school took 4 big tests. Luckily, I was in first place all the time but I was very stressed and angry. I had to go to many academies and everyday was so horrible. I was chased by time and I really wanted to rest but the most important test was coming. .

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, our school took the most important test. The test name is hard to translate in English but it is a test taken between the Middle and Final test. It was difficult for me to study because I was so busy studying in my English and Math academy. So when I took the test, I wasn’t prepared. I was very nervous and was unsure of having a good score. Most of the tests were fine but the Math test was so hard and I knew that I couldn’t get a hundred.

Yesterday, the test scores were revealed. I am not bragging but I was in first place again. Actually, I thought I would get a lower average than 95 but my average was 96.25. This is a very high score but my test score fell. At the First Term, my average was 99 but this time I got two more questions wrong. Through this test, I found out that I was too self-confident about myself. I was sure of myself so I didn’t study as much as the First Term. I think I need to be more humble and study more harder for Middles School test.

Younger Kids (Alice-thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 11:46 am

Well, for about last three days, I’ve been checking for kids with no nametag at my school. My job was to find students with no school nametags and punish them. At first, it was going fine. No one was really bothering me and the weather was great!

However, as time passed, kids as young as a first grader started bothering me. Some of them swore at my classmates who were working with me; some even kicked us! How rude! I tried to catch those rude little kids, but later, I figured out that running after them was no use at all. So, I just let them go.

On the second day, many kids were caught by my classmates because they didn’t have their nametags with them. Thinking that maybe, they would be smart enough not to run away, I didn’t watch those kids. But, no, I was definitely wrong. All of the kids ran off when my classmates were off-guard.

I have no idea why younger kids these days are being so mean and rude. I just can’t understand. Do the younger kids even think about how the older kids feel like when they’re treated like this? I really hope that my younger brother, who is going to be in the first grade next year, won’t act like the “RUDE & SELFISH, LITTLE” kids. :(

School Trip (Alice – Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:03 pm

There wasn’t anything too exciting that happened today. At school, my class was loud and fun as usual; well, there WAS a BIT of excitement actually.

Since next week, my school’s sixth graders are going on a trip to Pyeong-Chang, my classmates voted for seats and rooms today. My teacher told my class to write down the names of people we wanted to be with on the trip, giving us a small piece of paper. So, we did; everyone was so excited about getting their seats and rooms assigned, including me! I just can’t wait for the trip because it has been long since I’ve gone on a school trip.

I asked my friends about the school trip with curiosity. Some of my friends told me that the trip was fun; however, some of them told me that it was very tiring. I just want to believe the people who told me that the school trip was fun and exciting. What do you do on a school trip normally?

Leader’s Troubles (Tony/Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:34 pm

Yay! My class president term ends next week! I was a class president for about two month. This experience wasn’t ”FUN” if I had to describe it. There were so much disadvantages that I had to go through. Firstly, I had to go to a school meeting twice a month. This was really annoying, since it was boring, and it took away a lot of my free time. Also, I got more concerns from my teacher when I made a mistake compared to other students, since I was supposed to be a ‘role model’ for my class. Finally, I had to keep the class quiet. Since Korean students are good at ignoring concerns, I rarely succeeded on my attempts.

As I get older, responsibilities of class presidents seems to get heavier. When I was the class president in lower grades, I just had to do chores, and help the teacher. Contrasting to this, in sixth grade, this job was very tiresome. However, I don’t have the right to complain, since I am the one who chose to try out for the class president election. Next time, I should make more careful decisions on events that will have a long term effect on me.

Busy Koreans(Jennifer-thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:22 pm

Everybody who is reading this script should look back at themselves. Do you remember when you ignored an old grandmother who was asking for directions because you were busy? Do you remember when you didn’t do your chores because you didn’t have anytime? Do you remember that you just left because your friend was 5 minutes late and you didn’t have enough time?

I think most of you will say “YES!!!”

When foreigners come to Korea, they learn how to say “Bal-Le-Bal-Le” at first.  This is something very embarrassing but also proud of.  Japan took 100 years to make a car but Korea took about 30 years. I think this is because of Korea’s “Bal-Le-Bal-Le” culture. Koreans always do something fast and this helped us to develop our country and it will also help in the future. However, because we are busy, Koreans have a cold heart. When we see someone needing help, most of us just past by.(there might be few who helps) As a personal experience when I took the TOEFL Test the computer system didn’t come so people were really angry including me. However, if we were foreigners, most of the people would have just waited.

I think Koreans have to live slowly and comfortably. Also, we should be aware of time and take good care of it.

Exchange Rate(Ariel-Reaction)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:59 pm

Wow I guess a lot of you have noticed the exchange rate. It is almost 1500 won per dollar. Can you believe it?   The quality , or actually, the value of our money is falling. This surprised me very much, because there were even times when the exchange rate was 950 won per dollar, which meant our money was more valuable than the U.S. dollar. Actually, this affects our countries companies very much.

The companies that export goods such as Samsung, get advantages and benefits. This is because, before, let’s say, they sold a candy(I don’t mean Samsung) for 1U.S. dollar. Before, they would have gotten about 1000 won per product, however, now that the exchange rate rose, they would get about 1500 won per product, which is about 3/2 of the money they used to earn. This is a great, amazing benefit.

HOWEVER, for companies that import, it is a great disadvantage because they would have to pay about 3/2 of the money they used to pay. For example, if they were importing a candy for 1$ before, they used to pay about 1000won. However, they have to pay about 1500 won for each candy.

This is about the same effect that appeared, during the IMF economic crisis. However articles show, that since, Korea’s economy now, is greatly different from the economy during the IMF economic crisis, so it will be fine soon.

Transformed School(Ariel-thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 3:01 pm

Actually, this may not be your problem, but I hope you read carefully, Thank you.

I have been thinking, for the last few weeks, actually, about school. Students, or kids, when they go up to first grade, they start swearing. I don’t mean myself or any of you, but, most of my school friends swear. They say they learned swearing since grade one from school. So I thought,’Why are we learning swear words at school, when we are here to learn knowledge that helps us in our lives?’ I thought about this quite a lot, but all I can think of is children learning swear words from parents or other adults around them while not knowing the meaning, and using it at school as a bad meaning to others. Then, other kids at school would be learning those swear words and saying it, and the swear words just spreading.

Another case I’ve been thinking about is, why are Koreans so aware of the fact that they are different in genes, that they are girls or boys, and are so apart from each other? I can’t deny the fact that I was quite surprised when I first came to Lex Kim academy, and girls and boys when along very well with each other. In other academies, people are even very reluctant to sit beside each other.

In Canada, this didn’t happen. In school, my friends were so friendly with boys, so I was quite amazed, so I asked her why, and she said this was normal, and to prove it, she asked everyone in our class,”Are you my friend?” and if they said yes, she would hug them. I mean all the boys. No one said ew, or gross, and they didn’t even watch.

I really hope girls, and boys get along with each other more. It’s not like boys or girls are going to harm you, or something. Additionally, I think this hatred for boys, or girls, came from the fact that in the past, very harsh discrimination existed, and people still have that thought or prejudice.

Fighting (Alice-Reaction)

The Korean War ended (was paused) more than 50 years ago. Except for the fact that some families were separated apart, the North Korea pretty much settled in.

However, in some sides, or parts of the world, the wars haven’t ended yet. Just about two days ago, on the October 31st, there was a missile which stroke Pakistan. The missile was estimated to be one from the U.S. and 27 people died from the strike. “Well, no biggie,” some people might say “Only 27 people died. So what’s so crucial about that?”. Though it may seem so small and unimportant, this event means much more to the world.

If there are missiles and bombs flying over to other countries still after 10 years or so, the world might be in danger. Just by bombing a country, one can kill all the people of the countries nearby. To the attackers, a bombing might just be a fun little activity; to the people who was BOMBED, it is DEFINITELY not. Many people until now, have lost their valuable family and right now, people from other coutries haven’t realized anything YET. Or maybe, they’re just pretending.

The Costs of Oil (John – Reaction)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:26 am

In the world, one of the major problems is the cost if oil. People around the world fear that the costs of oil will rise rapidly and give a hard time for the people to live. Almost everything is made by using oil. For example, for fruits or meat, we have to import them. Then, the oil will be used in the transportations. This shows that oil is used in a lot of ways.

Scietists say that the prices of oil in the future is mysterious. Once, the prices went up to 150 dollars per barrel, but it also went down as much as 88 dollars per barrel. Scietists also say that the prices of oil will rise very high, but suddenly fall rapidly. They say that the highest point is called the peak oil. The price will slowly move up, and when it reaches to the peak, it would fall quickly. Currently, we are in the situation when the price is getting higher and higher.

The citizens in different countries are scared of the peak oil and they are not doing much anything. We must prepare what will happen in the future starting from now! Scietists say that the best way to prepare for this is to use alternative energies which include the solar energy and the wind energy, especially for cars. Then, even though the prices of oil rises, we would not have much disadvantages because we’re not using much energy made out of oil. In addition to this, we could also save the environment because oil polutes the environment. If we don’t start from now, then we would have big troubles in the future. People should start acting!

A violent Halloween(Jennifer-Reaction)

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/11/01/halloween.slaying.ap/index.html

Crime scene tape blocks off the home of Quentin Patrick, 22, who is charged with killing 12-year-old T.J. Darrisaw.

The house where Coroner died

Halloween is supposed to be a great day for children to get candy or eat candy for the whole day. However in South Carolina, Coroner Verna Moore, a 12 year boy was shot while trick-or-treating with their family. Coroner’s father and brother were wounded. The Police suspect Quentin Patrick has done the shooting.

Killing someone is unjustifiable but there are more problems. First of all, how could someone kill a family doing trick-or-treating? Halloween is happy day for getting candy and sometimes watching scary movies. Halloween is not a day for making crimes especially to children. Why would someone kill a child saying “trick-or-treat”?

Second, it is nonsense. Patrick was a criminal before and he might have been a little but crazy. However, Coroner’s family did not harm Patrick and it is just so unfair their child died and their families were injured.

I never thought that this kind of crime would have happen on Halloween. It is so ridiculous and hard to understand why Patrick killed Coroner. I think the police need to do a thoroughly search about this crime and give a big punishment.

Real Success of Life (William/Thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:44 am

What is real success of life? Going to good university? Earning lots of money? For the past few years I thought of success having a good life that you are satisfied with. However, I thought about it more and I think the real success is dying without worries and being satisfied for your life when you die.

I think it’s not a succes if you still worry when you die because that means to the end of your life you had something that you worried about which means your life wasn’t pleasant.

The life goes on until you die. So nothing is success until you die. It’s just some steps that will lead on to a big success. If you aren’t afraid to die any moment, I think that’s the real success that you can have in your life.

I hope I could also have the “real success” in my life.

Banning Trick-or-tricking or Not?(Julia-Reaction)

“For 16 years, real horror overshadowed the make-believe terror of Halloween in this Pennsylvania town, where trick-or-treating after dark was banned when an 11-year-old girl was abducted off the street four days before Halloween and killed” (The associated press, 1). The girl’s name was Shauna. She was kidnapped on Oct. 27, and three days later, her dead body was found. Fearing this would happen again, the town made the kids to do trick-or-treating during the daytime.

Elizabeth, who is ten years old, believed that the twon should not do this. What do you thing about seeing Halloween decorations at daytime? It wouldn’t look realistic. They are the best appreciated at night. Also, because most peopel have to go to work during the daytime, the children cannot get a lot of candies.  Plus, if people are worried about their children, they can go with them for trick-or-tricking. Therefore, Elizabeth gathered 175signitures from her friends and neighbors and wrote an essay, pursuading the town.

I believe that Elizabeth did a great thing because I also believe that trick-or-tricking is the most exciting at night. However, what do you think about this?

My Birthday(Julia-journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 6:36 am

It was my birthday on October 31, which was also Halloween. In the morning, my mom cooked delicious and scrumptous breakfast. It was wonderful. After school, I went to Lex Kim Enlgish School. Then, with my dad, I came back at home. I ran to my room to get changed into more comfortable clothes. When I turned off the light of my room, and went out to the living room, it was all dark. There was no light. “Mom! Is it a blackout?” I shouted. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a little ugly witch, who had a green face, appeared. She had a chocolate cake. Then, the witche started to sing in an offkey voice. It was actually my younger sister! Then, rest of my family memebers started to sing ‘Happy Birthday Song’. Wishing my secret wish, I blew the candle. After we ate the chocolate cake, my mom whispered to me, “I was going to buy you a digital camera, but I thought your sisters are going to be jealous. So I decided to buy it later, secretely.” I was very overjoyed.

MP3 to School Trip? (William/Thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:15 pm

Tomarrow is our school trip to Pyeong Chang. I am very excited. I am going to have lots of fun! Unfortunately, today the teachers said you can’t bring mp3 to the trip. I was planning to take it to the trip but now I am wondering if I should bring it with me. Many people in my class said they are going to bring mp3 and I want to but it kind of bothers me to do it. I wouldn’t have any trouble going through the item check by my teachers and parents. However, I usually follow the rules. The consequences for not bringing the mp3 would be telling a lie to all of my friends and not listening to music for 3 days. I think I am just going to break one rule maybe. I have to think more about this.

Accidents (Ariel-thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 2:41 pm

There was recently, actually yesterday, November 3rd, a man who was working in Everland died because a very heavy piece fell from the crane in a ride called “The Eagle’s Stronghold”.  Fortunately, no passengers died because it was time when all passengers were gone.

The man died right after that heavy piece fell on him.

This was the second accident that happened in Everland this year. So what I want to discuss is “Are any of these rides, or places like Everland safe?” I mean, even in Canada, in Wonderland, someone’s leg was cut of after riding a ride that goes stright down. These accidents are happening quite a lot of times all over the world, and it harms a lot of people and even kill them! Do you remeber accidents happened in Lotte World this yearm and Lotte World had a free week of rides so people would come, or else no one would come. There were a lot of accidents in Lotte World that happened.

So, to stop these accidents from happening, what should we as citizens of Korea, and people living on earth, what should we do? And, as the Korean government, what should they do?

My opinion is that, the government should regulate a stronger rule about this. They should make people check more often if the rides are safe, and if there are anything wrong, even the slightest, the company should not make people ride it, and let it go without people on it.

Us, as Korean citizens, should always look at the sign that shows when the ride took it’s safety check and which company and person checked it, and we should always make sure our belts are fit in properly before the ride.

Barack Obama becomes president(Ariel-reaction)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 5:56 am

So, Barack Obama has become the next president of United States after Bush. I am actually not surprised about this result, because all the people I knew, supported Barack Obama instead of McCain. Even all the Koreans around me supported Obama. I am not sure why my friends and people around me supported Obama, but I supported him because he is the first coloured president of the United States. In the history of United States, all the presidents before were all WASP(White Anglo – Saxon Protestant)s. That is another part of the reason why presidents of the United States pledge with their hands on the bible when they were, and are elected. I think Barack Obama became president because a lot of the people liked and trusted him because of the way he talked, and they thought by Barack Obama becoming president, it will stop racism, or racial discrimination.

Now, here is the problem. As I metioned before, I supported Barack Obama as well. However, before few days of the election, I learned that by Barack Obama becoming the president of United States, it will be a disadvantage for our country. I also learned that this was beacuse of president No or Ro. Barack Obama and president No/Ro were in a bad relationship, and unfortunately, they didn;t like eachother. I was quite surprised about this part. I only thought about the advantages of Obama becoming president, and the disadvantages of McCain becoming president. I was wrong.

Next week, I am going have a trip to the Jeju Island. I really wanted to go to Jeju Island before becasue I thought it might be very interesting. We will leave at Tuesday morning, ride the bus to the airport, ride the plane to Jeju Island, and do a lot of activities that I think will be very exciting. This includes riding a horse, going to a theme park, and so on. There are so many activities that I can’t say all of them. We will be staying there for three days and come back on Thursday afternoon. Today, we decided who will sleep in which room. There would be nine people in each of the rooms, and we had the choice to decide who will sleep where. Now, all we’re doing is waiting for the day to come.I really can’t wait for the trip. It feels like about 10 years have passed already. Well, I don’t think that all of the other students hate going to a trip. I think all of them are excited rather than being annoyed or unhappy. Everyone wants to go to a new place, if my thought is correct.

Anyway, I really wish time will go past quickly, and I also wish that I will have a good time with my friends at Jeju Island. There’s no fun without friends!

School Trip (Tony-Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 10:03 am

Today, I got back from my school trip. My school went on a trip to Pyung Chang in Gyuang Yuan Doe. We stayed there for 3 days. Some part of the trip was really exciting. I got to spend two nights with my friends. Also, playing with my friends during free time was fun. Also, we did a lot of fun activities such as camp fire. However, I learned that my home is the best place for me to live in.

The first reason is because the facilities of the home base where we slept in wasn’t that good. For example, there all the boys had to use just one public bathroom for washing before going to bed. Therefore, I had to wash in a crowded bathroom. Also, we had to sleep on blankets, and some of them weren’t as clean as we wanted them to be. Therefore, we had to sleep in a dirty environment.

Secondly, the teachers that led us there were short tempered. They constantly punished us if we didn’t obey the rules, and the rules were really strict. Of course, we have to follow rules, but the teachers there expected too much from us. For example, if one kid whispered in a room, the whole class had to get punished. I knew they did it so the students will obey the rules, and nobody would get hurt. However, their punishments were too harsh.

Before I went to this school trip, I felt that living in a house was so boring. I thought there were other places that would be much better than a house. However, after the school trip, I learned that my house is the best place to live in.

Back from School Trip

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:23 pm

Who Would Have Known? (John-Thought) Graded

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 1:39 pm

Well, as everyone should know, the election finished yesterday, Thursday, and Barack Obama became the president of United States of America. About one year ago, who would have known the history of America will change? Who would have known that the first black president would be elected this year, this election? I bet that nobody would have known. This is really a big news. There were series of battles between John McCain and Barack Obama, also including Sarah Palin. But in the end, who won? Obama defeated John McCain as if it was a piece of cake. Now, the only thing that the Americans are wondering about is what change might Obama really make while being a president.

I think that it was right for Barack Obama to be the president of United States of America. For the people that listened to Obama’s speeches, you could realize that he always promises that he will make big changes in the United States of America. He said that he will change everything in America. Not John McCain, but him. I thought that his argument in this was very formal and very interesting which made me want to know what he might do as a president. Also, I think that it will be really interesting if there would be a new black person in the list of America’s presidents. Anyway, I wish he would change how the economy is going in the United States of America, which includes the incident of costs of oil.  What exciting thing might he do in the future?

The School Trip (Alice – Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 3:15 pm

Finally, I came back from the school trip to Pyeong Chang today. The trip wasn’t anything like I had expected. I thought that the school trip would be fun and exciting. However, this trip wasn’t too exciting or fun.

Well, firstly, the teachers at the HOSTEL (as people called it) were extremely strict! Whenever the sixth graders were being loud, they punished us harshly. We had to bend our knees and put our hands on our heads. The most important of all, we had to keep our backs straight, too. On the first day, we mostly spent the time accomplishing tough goals (programs) such as working together as a class, competing against other classes. I was so tired.

On the second day, the sixth graders were divided into five groups: nanta, cheerleading, sign language, tambourine dance and the tal-choom (a Korean traditional dance). The class 9, which I am in, was assigned to the ”cheerleading” group. I tried my best, but dancing was obviously not my sport. :(   At night, there was a concert, where we danced and sang. It was fun; only, my class wasn’t too active.

Today, on the third day, there was another concert (you could call it the talent show, kind of), where the students showed off their skills in the sports or subject they were assigned. For example, I was assigned the “cheerleading” group; I had to dance in front of the other sixth graders with my group members. I messed up a lot during the show and I was so embarrassed because I was in the second line. I thought we did pretty fine (except for me). :)

I really thought that it was very mean of those teachers to be so cruel. Here’s a great example. One of my classmates who is a boy was punished harshly by the “cheerleading” teacher. The teacher pushed him, held him up and kicked him. I was SO surprised! I couldn’t believe my eyes! I felt so bad for the boy.

Anyways, people say that the point of this school trip was to learn how to be polite. However, I don’t really think that students who were bad-mannered would turn polite in just three days. Would they? I mean, can mean kids turn nice and kind all of sudden?

Expectation-Susie (Journal)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 12:36 am

Next week, through 12th to 14th, I’m going on a school camp to Jeju Island. It’s not my first time to go there, but I’m very excited to spend three days completely with my friends.

I heard that the place that we’re going to stay is awesome, and every activities like riding horses, exhibiting the Teddy bear museum are interesting, which makes me more delighted. It’s not just me who’s excited, but all of my friends are. We always talk about the trip-things to bring, what we’re going to do during our free-time-and some are counting down the days.

I’m expecting the trip to be awesome, of course. Large and clean rooms, delicious food, and fun activities… Also when I ride the airplane, I want to chat (in quite a loud voice) and watch TV. Since it’s our last trip in elementary school, I hope the teachers won’t stop us from chatting a lot, and give us a lot of free-time.

On the other hand, some of my friends who already went to their school camp said that it was awful which breaks my expectation a little. They didn’t like the hotel because it was too small or dirty, and they didn’t have any recreational activities. It was quite depressing to hear that. But, when I told my friends about some bad news, they didn’t care. Instead, their expectancy grew because they thought that we wouldn’t have the problems others had.

I admit that some of my expectations aren’t realistic, especially watching TV in the airplane. However, since it’s my last trip with my elementary school friends (even though some I will go to the same middle school with) I hope it would be an unforgettable trip!

Bullying(Jennifer–thought)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 2:39 am

There is a girl in my school named Sua Kim. She wears clean clothe and everything is fine except for her behavior. She is very rude and thinks that she is the best when her test score average is below 50. I only pointed out her weakness but Sua has a lot of good parts. As I have written, she wears expensive and pretty clothe and she is very skilled in English when she never went abroad. However, because of her rude behavior everybody hates her and sometimes I don’t like her, too. Sua and I go to the same church so I am very nice to her but others are not. Sua is always alone and when we have to work in partners she doesn’t have one. The popular girls swear at her and she cries very often. Like Sua, I think every school has a kid who is always alone. I think that we should know the feeling of them and we should be friends with them.

I think that there are two ways of bullying. The first way is by action. Perhaps there was a classmate that was so rude and you were really mad so you kicked her. This can be bullying and this can make the classmate be very upset. At my school, a kid was bullied by 12 popular girls. The popular girls were angry because the kid was too rude so they hit the kid. In this case, the kid was bullied by the 12 girls by action.

Second, bullying can be done by communication. The popular girls mostly bully kids by swearing. To be really honest I have been bullied by 4 girls before. Last year when I was class president, we went to School Camp. The 4 girls swore at me and I cried. In this case the 4 girls bullied me by communication.

Even if you are popular in school, everybody must have experienced being bullied. Most of you will know the feeling of being bullied and from now on we should look at their good parts and be friends. I think that Korea is very extreme in bullying. When I was in United States nobody was bullied and everybody was friends with each other. We should look back at ourselves and be friends with everybody.

Twilight(Ariel-Journal)

Have you ever read the book, “Twilight”? It is the best book I’ve ever read in my whole life of 13 years! Actually, before I read this book, I thought “Harry Potter” was the best book series that I have ever read but this book it much much better than “Harry Potter”!

The title is called “Twilight”, and it was writter by Stephen Mayer. It’s the first book in the “Twilight Saga”. The second book is “New Moon”, the third is “Eclipse”, and last is “Breaking Dawn”. I’ve only read the first until know, but it is the best book in the world! That’s my opinion, but still. Well, have you ever read a book that was exciting from the very first page? I haven’t, at least until I read twilight. I actually finished the book today. I started reading this book 3 days ago, and I was totally addicted to it! I didn’t have much time to read books, so I started reading in cars and while I walk on roads. I even read this book at school while recess! I wouldn’t have done this if this wasn’t TWILIGHT!

I don’t want to ruin this book for you, but since I read it because my friend, who is also very addicted to the TWILIGHT SAGA, and is reading the 4th and last book in the series, told me about what happened in the stroy, I will tell you.

The main character is Bella and Edward. Bella just moved into Forks, and she goes to school there. She sees this very handsome boy who happens to be Edward. Edward and Bella fall in love with eachother, BUT! Edward happens to be a vampire. Bella still loves Edward, but she is upset because Edward doesn’t get old because he is a vampire(born in 1901!), and he is and will be 17 until someone kills him, but Bella keeps getting older. Then, some problems are caused…

You have to read this book! Even though it is 498 pages, I finished this book in 3 days! I said “THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE!”.

I am dying to buy “New Moon” in a few days. Now, I am addicted, and I can’t live without the TWILIGHT SAGA!

Obama elected as the 44th president of US-Susie(reaction)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 5:29 am

On November 6th, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th president of United States. He was the first colored person to become a US president. He first competed with Hillary Clinton and then in the major election, he competed with John MCcain. At first, nobody knew that he was going to become the president since Hilary was such a strong candidate with a lot of advocates. However, by Obama’s pursuasive speeches and strong policies, people were attracted. At last, he also won MCcain and became the president!

I was quite surprised because he wasn’t very famous as a politian. However, now, I think he is an appropriate person to lead US. When I read the newspaper aritcle that talked about Obama’s childhood, it was kind of astounding because I found out that he wasn’t a well-behaving student for a while. It was very impressive that he changed his mind and became a helpful person.

I think by Obama being elected as the president, there would be many changes happening to US. I hope he would become a good leader and most of all, solve the economic problem we have. ^^

What Inventions Now? (Thought-Julia)

What will it be like in 2020? There would be a lot of inventions. People think creatively and make unique inventions. There are some types of new inventions. First, there is the iBangle. IBanlge is a mixture of  an MP3 and a bracelet.  It was invented by an Indian designer named Gopinath Prasana. The iBangleis made of a “thin piece of aluminum with a multi-touch track pad. To achieve the perfect fit, a cushion inside the bracelet inflates to keep it taut against your wrist” (Lorie, 1). The adventage of the iBanlge is that you don’t need earphones. You just have to use wireless earbuds.

Another invention is called dining table pod. Invented by a Turkish designer, Fatih Can Sarioz, this dining table can be opend and closed like a flower. When it is opened, it becomes a dining table, and when it is closed, it looks like a “sphere-shaped futuristic pod” (Lorie, 1). Also, there is a lightsource at the center of the table.

I believe that these inventions are very creative, and later in the future, the world will look like a totally different place. I want to create a unique invention that will please other people.

Korean Songs (Tony-Reaction)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 8:32 am

A lot of Korean students knows about a Korean boy band named, Big Bang. Also, I knew that these songs will effect thousands of children that listens to them.

The number of children who will get effected will be huge, because a lot of children will listen to famous songs.

Secondly, a lot of music videoes made by famous bands or singers contain scenes that gives bad effects toward children. We can take a music video of “Day by Day” as an example. This video contains a scene of tow members of Big Bang fighting physically. They punch each other until both of them is hurt. Actually, two of my class mates fought in my class after they watched the video. Also, it shows one member who destroys his house to show his anger. Again, some kids might follow this when they get mad.

I hope a lot of singers and bands will consider about the effects that they give toward children. They should change their songs and movies into more of a beneficial type.

Why should people have to fight each other for singers? (Irene-Thoughts)

Filed under: Uncategorized — Liam @ 10:33 am

Okay. It could make some people angry right now, but I do not like Big Bang, neither the other singing groups except for SHINee. Some people reading this are going to be very angry at me and write insulting comments. However, that is the problem that I am writing this post is to argue that I do not understand why people have to insult each other just because of the difference in opinions.

For an example..

A.  I just like SHINee so much!

B. Why do you like them? They are rubbish compared to Wonder girls.

A. Wonder girls? Are you kidding me? They are !@#$%^&U*)(*&^%$

B. What did you say, you ()*&@_(&#*_!^& YOU OUGHT TO DIE!!

This is a very common situation of what happens between people these days, and I can not stand it! Why do people have to fight and insult each others just because their interst is different? People should be able to respect other’s opinions, and be able to only like what you like and not take care of other things.

When the world is interested in Obama being elected as United States president, there was something really terrible that happened in the island of Hispaniola, Haiti. A school in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, was collapsed and nearly 100 people were injured and 50 people died.

Actually I am not going to write about Haiti school being collapse. Instead, I am going to write about the world’s irresponsibility. Obama being elected is good news and since United States is a worldly-known country, everybody cares. On the other hand, the school collapsed is sad news and Haiti is a small island so most of you won’t know. However, Haiti needs more interest and help from the other countries than Untied States.

Since the world is developing, the world is interested in big and strong countries such as United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and etc. These countries help the world develop but the small countries also need interest. I don’t mean Singapore, Monaco and etc that are small but rich and developed countries. I mean countries such as Haiti, Samoa, Tonga and other island countries. These countries need care and help from the world to develop like other countries.

Until the 21 century ends, the world should get interested in small countries and should help develop them.

Currently, we are running out of oil. The people in America are trying to find more oil by drilling in Alaska. This ruins the environment in many ways. First of all, It could kill a lot of animals that are currently living at that place. Next, another problem is that if we get more oil, then there would be more cars which would cause air pollution. We shouldn’t make this happen. Let’s think it in another way. If we give harm to the environment, the air, water, soil and etc will be polluted. Soon, the harm will come right back to us. For example, if we pollute the air, then it would be hard for us to breath or make it hard for us to see. This could casue some people to even die in the end. For the environment, and for ourselves, we should not harm the environment.

There are many other different kinds of energies that are all around us that we could also use. First there is the solar energy. The solar energy is the energy that uses the heat of the sun. The first picture above is a picture of a hybrid car that uses solar energy to activate. Hybrid cars do not fume out exhaust gas, so it also does not pollute the envirnment at the same time. The main type of energy that people could use easily is solar energy because it is obviously easy to find. I think that it would be much better if we use new energy just like this.

Another type of new energy is the wind energy. Another kind of energy that we could easily find is the wind energy. The second picture above is a picture of a wind tribune which makes electric using the wind power. The wind power also gives us a lot of help because even if it is used just like oil energy, it also does not pollute the environment. The environment is very important in our lives. We should keep on inventing new things that could make energy and also not harm the environment!

Does This Really Work? (Alice – Thought)

As you know, there are criminals all over the world including Korea. The Korean Government has been trying hard to get hold of those criminals. However, it wasn’t easy.

So, recently, the Korean Government tried out a new way. It was where the criminals had to wear electronic bracelets that could track where they were and what they were doing. People have been believing that this way would help a lot. However, their expectations were broken into little pieces. Here’s why: this new system was experienced on a man. The government released him from the jail. The man, let’s call him B, was quiet for a while, actually about a month or two. Then, suddenly, just a few days ago, B caused another problem after drinking a large amount of alcohol; he is back in jail now.

This example clearly shows how this new system does not really affect the criminals. The electronic bracelets definitely does not help the government control the criminals. Not only that, they might even cause some mental disorders to some people by stressing them out. B was one of those stressed-out people. He felt that somebody was watching him everytime he did something.

What can the government do to solve the problem of controlling the criminals?
